Keen to offer consumers increasingly high-quality and engaging messages, companies are enriching traditional SMS and MMS text messages with interactive multimedia content, using the same opt-in process as SMS. This is what RCS, or Rich Communication Services, offers, presented as the successor to SMS. The term "Rich SMS" refers to the integration of a hypertext link (or hyperlink) into an SMS message.

RCS: What exactly are we talking about?

RCS is a messaging protocol designed to replace SMS and MMS, offering much more advanced features. Developed by the GSMA consortium, this technology aims to standardize rich messaging services on mobile networks, allowing users to enjoy an experience similar to that of popular messaging apps (WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Viber) directly from their native messaging app.

Unlike traditional SMS and MMS, which are essentially limited to sending text, images, and videos in a fairly rudimentary way, RCS offers a much richer range of options. With RCS, users can not only send text, but also high-resolution images, videos, audio files, documents, and even share their location in real time. In addition, RCS allows for the integration of interactive features such as clickable buttons, quick replies, read receipts, and group chats.

SMS,
: a universal communication tool

SMS is the medium of immediacy and how it transforms your company's communication strategy.

What are the advantages of RCS over traditional technologies?

1. Enhanced security

RCS offers security enhancements. Communications via RCS can be encrypted, adding an extra layer of protection for sensitive exchanges. This is particularly important for financial transactions or exchanges of personal data, where security is paramount. For example, RCS chats in Google Messages support end-to-end encryption. The identity of senders is also verified, in particular to limit the risk of fraud.

2. Rich multimedia content

One of the limitations of SMS and MMS is their poor ability to handle high-quality multimedia files. With RCS, this barrier has been removed. You can now send and receive high-resolution images, HD videos, animated GIFs, stickers, and even design carousel-style formats. This allows you to create messages that are much more attractive and engaging for users. For example, a company can send a video presentation of a new product or a PDF file containing detailed information, which is impossible with traditional SMS.

3. Real-time interactions

RCS enables true real-time communication, similar to instant messaging applications. Users can see when their message has been read (an icon appears indicating that a message has been read), whether the other person is typing a reply (an icon appears indicating that a message is being written), and can engage in much more fluid and interactive live conversations (one-to-one chat). RCS also allows users to share their location, add events to their calendar, and more. These features enrich the user experience by making exchanges more dynamic and responsive, which is particularly useful for customer service, where responsiveness is crucial.

4. Interactive features

With RCS, businesses can embed action buttons directly into their messages. For example, an RCS message could include a "Buy Now," "Book," or "Learn More" button, allowing users to interact directly with the message without leaving the app. This interactivity opens up new possibilities for marketing and customer engagement, making each message much more functional and action-oriented.

5. Group messaging and scheduling

RCS supports group messaging, with advanced features such as group member management, adding or removing participants, and even event planning. For example, for a work team or group of friends, it becomes easier to organize meetings, share documents, and keep everyone informed in real time.

6. Compatibility and standardization

One of the great advantages of RCS is that it works directly through the phone's native messaging app, without the need to download a third-party app. This means that as long as your carrier supports RCS and your phone is compatible, you can enjoy these advanced features without any extra effort. RCS aims to provide a unified experience regardless of carrier or device, which was not the case with SMS/MMS.

For businesses, the transition to RCS opens the door to a new era of customer communication. With this technology, they can send more engaging, interactive, and visually appealing messages, thereby increasing conversion and engagement rates. According to af2m (French Association for the Development of Multi-operator Multimedia Services and Uses), while Apple is hinting at the arrival of the RCS protocol on its iPhones in the second half of 2024, RCS already covers 46% of the mobile market, or 26.8 million RCS-compatible smartphones. Between the last quarter of 2023 and today, the number of RCS-enabled mobile devices has therefore increased by +8.9%. Advertisers' enthusiasm for this technology has been confirmed: between March 2023 and February 2024, 130 advertisers adopted RCS, 30% of whom were new users.
